Hello! My name is Mrs. Gray, and this is my Confession of a Music Mom. Many of you know that Kierra Gray is our oldest daughter and that she began her musical journey at GMG when she was four-years-old. Like any proud parent, I've had the opportunity to witness her growth and development as an individual and in her music career. She recently released a new song called "Slow Down," so I sat down to interview her to get some insight into why she wrote this song and decided to release it in the midst of the pandemic. I hope that you enjoy the interview!
With the current Covid-19 pandemic sending the world into a crisis, singer-songwriter Kierra Gray shares the biggest lesson she has learned through it all, to slow down. Kierra shared that during the quarantine she has had time to spend with her family, read a book, take a nap, and simply take time to smell the flowers without feeling guilty. She states, “This song is a reminder for me to not just exist, but to be present. I hope this message resonates with you as much as it has with me.” She has also made the song available for download from her website for free. She says, “Releasing this song isn’t about making a profit. It’s about giving a hopeful reminder, so you can download it from my website [and] give whatever you feel you should!”
When asked about the story behind the song Kierra said, “I actually wrote this song with a good friend of mine from Nashville, Kimber Terry. I was new to Nashville and met Kimber at a church, where she was leading worship. We went for coffee, hit it off, and decided to write together. I didn’t really know what to expect, but it was an amazing experience. As we were writing, we began sharing our experiences with being in the industry and the pressures we both felt from it. This song is really special to me because, in a way, I wrote it for myself. ‘Slow down’ was something that I really needed to hear, and I feel like it’s something that a lot of other people need to hear as well.”
One of Kierra’s most recent musical achievements was being selected as a 2018 National YoungArts Winner in the Voice/Singer-Songwriter discipline. She was flown out to Miami, Florida for a week of intensive masterclasses and performances. While there, she got to work with Tony award-winning vocal coach and therapist, Joan Lader, and Grammy award-winning artist, Lisa Fischer. She's also had the opportunity to provide two of her original songs for the 2020 Korean documentary and musical, Permission to Exist, scheduled for release later this year. When asked about her plans for the future, Kierra said, “I have plenty of dreams and goals. I want to release an EP, and I’d absolutely love to do more work with film and TV. But for right now, I’m just taking it one day at a time. I’m slowing down and I'm thankful for where I am in this current moment.” You can find her new song, “Slow Down,” on her website www.kierragray.com and on YouTube.
